In a 5:3:1 gear ratio, the spool rotates five times for every handle turn. The ratio also indicates the relationship between the drive gear and the pinion gear. The drive gear, attached to the handle, spins the pinion gear. In this case, the pinion gear rotates once for every three rotations of the drive gear.
